Ornaments depart from main note

  1. Mordent (boyin, "波音")
    A very short upper neighbouring note, then return to the main note.
  2. Trill (chanyin, "顫音")
    A quick alternation between the main and upper neighbouring notes.​
  3. Glissando (liyin, "歷音")
    A rapidly executed series of discretely audible notes, going up-or-downwards.

Ornaments depart from decoration note

  1. Acciaccatura (dieyin, "叠音")
    A very short upper neighbouring note, followed by the main note.
  2. Stroke (dayin, "打音")
    A very short lower neighbouring note, followed by the main note.
  3. Grace note (yiyin, "倚音")
    A notated, subscripted note followed by the main note. A grace note at end calls zhengyin, "贈音".
  4. Glide/ portamento (huayin, "滑音")
    A glide from the notated note to the main note.
